Tourism veteran Lorne Whyte joins crew of Victoria Tall Ships Society
VICTORIA (January 21, 2008) – The Victoria Tall Ships® Society is pleased to announce that Lorne Whyte has joined the Society’s Board of Directors. Mr. Whyte’s wealth of experience in the tourism and business sectors is a much-welcomed addition to the crew actively planning the 2008 Victoria Tall Ships Festival, coming June 26-29 to Victoria’s Inner Harbour.
Mr. Whyte, who recently retired as Present and CEO of Tourism
Victoria after nearly two decades at the helm of that organization,
will play a lead role in the areas of marketing, tourism packaging and
partnerships.
Victoria is the only major port of call on Canada’s west coast in
the 2008 Tall Ships Challenge, a series of races along the west coast
of Canada and the United States. The family-friendly festival will
feature two-dozen tall ships for tours and nightly cannon battles,
musicians and a variety of children's programs – including a pirate
school.
In 2005, the festival attracted 38,000 visitors and resulted in a $5.2 million impact to the local economy.
The Victoria Tall Ships Society is a not-for-profit organization,
incorporated in May 2003 for the purpose of bringing a Tall Ships
Festival to Victoria. The Society’s vision is to promote a legacy for
youth and the life lessons learned through sail training and to promote
Victoria’s rich maritime history.
